Santec extends its range of light sources for OCT
Santec, a leading manufacturer of tunable lasers and test instruments for the fiber optics industry, is pleased to announce the release of a new type of tunable laser, the HSL-2000. This product represents a new generation of light sources designed for both optical sensing and real-time optical imaging applications such as OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography). The laser has a 100nm tuning range with a scanning speed controllable up to 25kHz. OCT is currently used for retinal examinations and is being developed as a diagnostic tool for cancer and other medical conditions. Compared to existing sources the HSL-2000 will enable higher resolution images to be achieved.
Santec sold the world's first tunable laser in 1987 and has built-up an impressive reputation in the telecommunications industry where tunable lasers are widely used. Until now the tuning or scan speed of such lasers has been limited to around 1 second. The HSL-2000 builds on Santec's core external cavity laser technology. It has a wavelength range from 1260 to 1360nm, an output power of up to 10mW but provides a continuous wavelength scan with an adjustable speed up to 25kHz. The rapid scan is indispensable for real-time high-resolution imaging applications such as next generation OCT.
Santec HSL-2000 will be available to ship to customers from September 2005 and extends Santec's range of light sources for OCT which includes the UWS-1000G, Gaussian Profile Ultra-Broadband Light Source optimized for high-resolution OCT. Both light sources are the world's first commercial products of their type and will be available as stand-alone bench-top instruments and OEM modules for integration into OCT and sensing systems.
