Integrated Optical
Add-Drop Module, OAS-30
November 6, 2001
Santec has built on its expertise in the manufacture
of passive optical components for DWDM applications and is pleased
to announce the release of an integrated component that will enable
the realization of compact reconfigurable add/drop devices. The
new component, OAS-30, combines the functionality of a 2x2 optical
switch, a variable optical attenuator, and a photodetector into
a single compact, hermetically sealed unit.
Multichannel add-drop modules which provide wavelength
switching or routing functions generally consist of 2x2 optical
switches, variable attenuators for power adjustment, and optical
couplers and photodetectors for power monitoring. Such devices are
increasingly being used as nodes in metro-core and metro-access
systems. Santec?s OAS-30 combines this functionality into a single
integrated device. The OAS-30 has the distinct advantages of reduced
size, lower insertion losses, lower polarization dependent loss
(PDL) and lower costs compared to conventional solutions. For example,
an insertion loss of less than 1.4dB is achieved for the through
channel, and a PDL of less than 0.25dB for the complete module.
In addition, a single channel unit measures just 55x36x12 mm.
In multi-channel applications, a complete 4 channel
module, i-OADM, with integrated Mux and Demux filters can also be
provided. Devices are available for both 100GHz and 200GHz systems
with a complete package size of only 185x150x25mm.
