Optical Variable
Attenuator (OVA) using MEMS Technology
October 24, 2002
Santec's
new MEMS based OVA component provides a compact, low cost, electronically
adjustable optical attenuator for WDM system integration. The unit
has been specifically designed to overcome technical and reliability
issues found in similar devices, whilst maintaining functional and
mechanical compatibility. It is available in 1, 4 and 8 channel
packages.
Individual channels have a 30dB linear attenuation
range with better than 0.1dB resolution, and operate using a 5V
d.c. supply. A 45dB blocking function is also available. Insertion
loss is 0.8dB, and the PDL is less than 0.2dB. These excellent optical
properties, combined with small size and high optical input power
threshold will enable these devices to be used in a wide range of
applications. These include EDFA control, DWDM system transmitter
or receiver signal level adjustment, and OADM level adjustment or
channel blocking.
The OVA is not affected by external vibrations
or mechanical shocks, and is hermetically sealed to ensure long
term reliability. Samples are currently available for testing with
volume production starting in January.
